Born in London in 1975, Rupert Alexander started painting at an early age. In 1994 he enrolled at Chelsea College of Art but, frustrated by the college's exclusive focus on conceptual art forms, started to search outside Britain for a school with a more rigorous approach to drawing and painting. In Italy he found two ateliers, Charles H. Cecil Studios and the Florence Academy of Art, and, upon winning the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship, moved to Florence to commence a training in figurative painting. After a year of study he was invited to teach painting at the Cecil Studios. He spent the next seven years living between Italy and England, painting figurative works at his studio in Florence and working on commissioned portraits in London. In 2004 he built a studio in London where he is now permanently based.
